I started working with children over ten years ago, volunteering in a local school and working in a local nursery. This was when my passion for learning became evident and I knew I wanted to become a teacher. One of my fondest memories of the classroom is about a boy in year 1. He didn’t know how to tie his shoelaces, so we practiced together, and he seemed happy in his efforts although not quite managing it. The following week, I returned to the class and he ran up to me, huge, cheeky grin on his face, and he showed me exactly how to tie his shoes. He was so proud of himself, and so was I! The following year, I volunteered with the year 4 class and was blown away by their teacher. She captivated the entire class, made jokes, sang songs, was so animated, and the children loved her! I still use some of her tactics today. To me, it is far more important to engage a child, to make them laugh and to make them feel unique than it is to deliver the most planned and structured lessons, and this is where my ‘let’s make learning fun again’ slogan came from.
Fun Fact About Me
I also teach ‘Chum Kune Do’ which is a form of mixed martial arts and kickboxing. In 2019, after 15 years of training, I earned my Black Belt, first Dan and instructor status. I also have several fighting titles including European champion and now my students are working towards titles of their own.
Let this be a warning, kids: make sure you don’t forget your homework!
